Sorry to hear that another business is closing down in Calgary. Buon Giorno was one of my favorite restaurants and I'm sure that it was an iconic Italian restaurant in Calgary, loved by many others. It was opened in 1987 and later the restaurant was owned by Gabriele Battistessa for decades. The renowned Italian chef Gabriele Battistessa established the restaurant very well and brought it up to its finest and he retired in June 2016 but sadly only a few months later passed away after battle with cancer. The property was sold to Arlington Street Investments, and they found another person to continue the restaurant for nearly four years until now. Beginning of last year, the City granted the application for change of use for a Cannabis Store for this location and I wonder if this was the reason for shutting down. The restaurant is situated on a prime location of 17th Ave with a big parking lot behind the building so who knows what's going to be developed there, and thinking about the opportunity with little properties beside, it might be a big conversion. Anyway, as far as I remember, the name of the restaurant "Buon Giorno" is an Italian word meaning "Good morning / Good day" which you can generally use as "hello" and "goodbye" from the morning to after lunch. I am not 100% sure of this vocabulary so perhaps my Italian friends can help me out with correction. I know it is a positive word though. Due to the slowing down of the economy for the past couple of years, increasing of labour cost, and recent COVID19 crisis, hundreds of local businesses, especially many restaurants could not survived. Remember we should support local businesses! The restaurants in Calgary is reopening today with dine-in option, and for the celebration of this, I am planning to have lunch at one of my favorite local restaurant.
